Still, shoulder pain sidelines competitive swimmers, fitness enthusiasts, and triathletes more often than almost any other injury in the sport.  The reason comes down to training volume. During a single workout, each shoulder may perform thousands of overhead strokes. Over weeks, months, and years, even subtle problems with technique, muscle balance, or recovery can gradually lead to pain and injury. The path to relief starts with understanding exactly what's driving the pain.

Understanding Swimmer's Shoulder

Swimmer’s shoulder is not a specific diagnosis. Rather, it is an umbrella term used to describe shoulder pain caused by repetitive overhead swimming motions that place stress on the muscles, tendons, and supporting structures of the shoulder. The condition most often develops gradually rather than after a single traumatic event.

The shoulder has the greatest range of motion of any joint in the body, making it highly dependent on coordinated muscle function for stability. During swimming, the rotator cuff muscles and shoulder blade stabilizers work continuously to keep the joint properly aligned throughout every stroke.
