What are Trigger Point Injections?

Trigger point injections (TPIs) are minimally invasive treatments used to relieve muscle pain and tension caused by “trigger points” which are tight knots or bands of muscle fibers that form when muscles fail to relax. These trigger points can cause localized pain or refer pain to other areas of the body, commonly affecting the neck, shoulders, back, and legs. During the procedure, a small amount of anesthetic, saline, or corticosteroid is injected directly into the trigger point to relax the muscle and reduce pain.

When are Trigger Point Injections Recommended?

Trigger point injections may be recommended for patients who experience:

  • Chronic muscle pain that does not respond to stretching, massage, or physical therapy
  • Myofascial pain syndrome involving tight muscle knots
  • Tension headaches or neck pain related to muscle tightness
  • Fibromyalgia-related muscle pain
  • Back, shoulder, or leg pain caused by muscle spasms or strain

How are Trigger Point Injections Performed?

The procedure is typically done in a medical office. The provider locates the painful trigger point by palpation (feeling for tight knots). After cleaning the skin, a fine needle is inserted directly into the muscle knot, and the chosen medication is injected. Multiple sites can be treated in one session. The procedure usually takes 10–15 minutes and does not require sedation.

What to Expect During Recovery After Trigger Point Injections?

Patients may feel mild soreness or bruising at the injection site, which usually resolves within a day or two. Many patients notice immediate pain relief or improved range of motion. Light stretching and gentle movement are encouraged after treatment to prevent recurrence.

What are the Risks of Trigger Point Injections?

  • Mild soreness or bruising at the injection site
  • Temporary numbness or tingling
  • Infection or bleeding (rare)
  • Slight dizziness or lightheadedness

What are the Benefits of Trigger Point Injections?

  • Quick and effective pain relief
  • Relaxation of tight or knotted muscles
  • Improved mobility and muscle function
  • Reduction in referred pain and headaches
  • Minimally invasive procedure with no downtime
