What is Radiofrequency Ablation?
Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive pain management procedure that uses targeted heat energy to disrupt pain signals transmitted by specific nerves. Guided by imaging such as fluoroscopy or ultrasound, a small needle is inserted near the affected nerve, and radiofrequency energy is delivered through the needle to safely and precisely ablate (or “deactivate”) the nerve. This helps reduce or eliminate chronic pain without the need for major surgery or long-term medication use.
When is Radiofrequency Ablation Recommended?
RFA may be recommended for patients who experience:
- Chronic neck or back pain caused by arthritis or facet joint dysfunction
- Pain from sacroiliac (SI) joint inflammation
- Chronic pain in the knee, hip, or shoulder that has not improved with other treatments
- Nerve-related pain such as occipital neuralgia
- Persistent pain following spine or joint injury
- Patients who responded well to diagnostic nerve blocks but need longer-lasting relief
How is Radiofrequency Ablation Performed?
The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia with mild sedation. The patient lies comfortably while the physician uses imaging guidance to position a thin needle near the targeted nerve. Once the correct location is confirmed, a small electrical current is applied to heat the nerve tissue for 60–90 seconds. This disrupts the nerve’s ability to send pain signals. The entire procedure usually takes less than 30 minutes, and patients can return home the same day.
What to Expect During Recovery After Radiofrequency Ablation?
Most patients experience mild soreness at the injection site for a few days. Pain relief typically begins within 1–3 weeks and can last 6 to 18 months, depending on the nerve and condition treated. Normal activities can usually be resumed within 24–48 hours.
What are the Risks of Radiofrequency Ablation?
- Temporary soreness or swelling at the treatment site
- Mild numbness or tingling
- Rare infection or bleeding
- Temporary increase in pain before improvement
What are the Benefits of Radiofrequency Ablation?
- Long-lasting pain relief without surgery
- Reduced reliance on pain medication
- Improved mobility and daily function
- Quick, outpatient procedure with minimal downtime
- Safe, effective, and repeatable if pain returns
