What are Nerve Blocks?

Nerve blocks are minimally invasive injections used to relieve pain by interrupting pain signals traveling through specific nerves. They involve injecting a local anesthetic, sometimes combined with a corticosteroid, near a targeted nerve or group of nerves. Nerve blocks can help diagnose the source of pain or provide therapeutic relief for both acute and chronic pain conditions affecting areas such as the neck, back, arms, and legs.

When are Nerve Blocks Recommended?

Nerve blocks may be recommended for patients who experience:

  • Chronic pain caused by nerve injury or inflammation
  • Back or neck pain from herniated discs or spinal arthritis
  • Post-surgical or post-traumatic pain
  • Migraines or occipital neuralgia
  • Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)
  • Diagnostic evaluation to identify the source of pain

How are Nerve Blocks Performed?

The procedure is performed in a medical office or outpatient center. After cleaning the skin, a fine needle is guided, often with ultrasound or fluoroscopy, toward the affected nerve. The physician injects a small amount of anesthetic, sometimes with steroid medication, to numb the area and reduce inflammation. The entire process usually takes 10–30 minutes and does not require general anesthesia.

What to Expect During Recovery After Nerve Blocks?

Patients may feel temporary numbness or weakness in the affected area, which typically resolves within a few hours. Pain relief can last from several days to months, depending on the condition and type of block. Normal activities can usually be resumed the same day or the following day.

What are the Risks of Nerve Blocks?

  • Temporary numbness or weakness
  • Mild bruising or soreness at the injection site
  • Infection or bleeding (rare)
  • Allergic reaction to the medication
  • Nerve injury (very rare)

What are the Benefits of Nerve Blocks?

  • Immediate pain relief in many cases
  • Reduced need for oral pain medications
  • Improved function and quality of life
  • Helps identify the source of pain for targeted treatment
  • Minimally invasive and performed on an outpatient basis
